Introduction

History is fun to study. Many people have looked at Calgary’s past, citing dates, places, people who made a difference.

My goal was a little less ambitious, and I only wanted to look at a sliver of time, 20 years, the years of my childhood and the childhood of those I grew up with.  (1949-1969)

It was a snapshot in our case of the Boomer experience in Calgary. My sampling was in the two schools I attended, King Edward Elementary Junior High and Viscount Bennett Jr Sr High. SO this study does not name names but it looks at common ground -what we shared.

This study is ‘talkin’ bout my generation’

It is like in those movie theatres maybe about an entire history and you only focus on a part. This is where I came in.

I wanted to recall what we were doing. This is a study of toys we played with, food we ate, songs we sang, TV shows, movies. I look at ad slogans we may remember and the clothes we wore, our hairdos and how we gently entered the city we got to know – our bus routes, stores, restaurants. Our peripheral but growing sense of politics and the economy

This snapshot is meant to trigger for others memories too.
